Summer in the City

All right, I'm going to date myself here, but do you remember this song by the Lovin' Spoonful? It's called Summer in the City and I remember it clearly. In fact, I remember all the words...

"Hot town,
summer in the city.
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty..."

Why do I ask? Because here in New York, although it's still officially spring, it feels like summer. And I love summer. In a big, big way. I love the way sidewalk vendors come out in force, crowds in Central Park, strappy sandals, short shorts, bronzed skin and sun-lightened hair. I love the beach, Coney Island and margaritas on the rooftop of a friend's apartment building. I love it all.

"...Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty..."

I realize summer is different everywhere. I've just told you the things I like most about the season, the things I do during the summer months that make me happy.

But what about you?

What do you do in the summer?

What brings you joy?

Please leave me a note here, and at the end of the day I'll choose one person to receive a download of one of my Ellora's Cave titles. Just tell us what you like about summer, what makes you happy about the warm, sultry months.

Thanks for stopping by!

Ack! I'm Late!!

ACK!! It's my day to blog here at the Goddesses of Storytelling and I'm late!!

I feel like the rabbit in Alice In Wonderland, running to and fro and muttering to myself, "I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date!" You, my friends, are my date and I apologize for being late. I have to tell you, though, that I tried to be here earlier. Really, I did. But the internet access at the B&B Mickey and I are staying in in Vermont has been spotty all day. The owner says it's a "normal" thing here, but I'll tell you it would drive me mad to not be able to log on whenever I want to. I've been bugging out all day over it, and we're supposed to be here on a wonderful, romantic interlude. Some romance, eh? Going slightly batty over not being able to log on and "chat" with all of you? Yes, it's pretty funny...now that I'm here!

But I guess that's the way life is sometimes. We plan so carefully yet some things are out of our control. Fortunately neither Mickey nor I are controlling people, so we generally go with the flow. Laid back, I guess you'd say. We are alike in more ways than I like to admit, LOL.

I wonder if that's how most couples are? Do you think people gravitate towards someone with a personal style similar to their own? Or do they crave something completely different in a mate?

Most times my books feature a couple who have differences to reconcile before they can find happiness. Because honestly, I like a little tension in a relationship--on paper, that is. I enjoy reading about how two people either deal with a tough situation or learn to live together despite their differences, so that's the kind of couples I write about.

Hmm...maybe Mickey and I aren't what I'd consider a prime couple for noveling purposes...no major obstacles...no differences, really...hmm...maybe we should discuss this further. He's waiting for me poolside, so I'm going to thank you for stopping in today and bid you farewell for now. I've got some talking to do beside a pool. And maybe a couple of Margaritas would make the conversation flow more smoothly...

Until next time, have fun!

Reading

Most writers read. A lot. And I'm no different from any other writer. I read. A lot. Recently I've been sidelined by health issues so I've been reading a lot more than usual. And that, let me tell you, is a lot.

So what have I been reading, you ask? I'm pleased to tell you that most of what's been taking me away from my current situation, transporting me into worlds and lives unknown to me except through the wonderful storytelling abilities of those who wrote them, are books by companion goddesses. I have a limited time to sit without discomfort so I'm just going to list some of what I've read, and you'll have to take my word for it that they've all been great. Although great is truly an understatement. I highly recommend each and every one of them for your own personal reading pleasure.

Okay. Ready? Here goes... Everglades Wildfire by Isabelle Drake (great family turmoil in that one), Heaving Bosoms by Ashlyn Chase (made me giggle, love her sense of humor!), Crazy for the Cowboy by Cindy Spencer Pape (I read this twice, I enjoyed it so so much), Anchor and Storm by Kate Poole (anyone that enjoys historicals will be nuts over this one. I was!) and Overlord's Vessel by Bronwyn Green (Micah and Elizabeth--a couple that won't be forgotten!).
I told you I read a lot. I read these in the past few days, LOL!!

Fortunately, the goddesses are a prolific bunch and there is an assortment of tempting offerings that will keep me occupied in the coming days. The hardest part of reading what these talented women have written is deciding what to read first! But eventually, I'll read them all.

And no matter what your taste, reading friends, there is a goddess that writes just for you, too!

Until next time, happy reading!

Other plans

Have you ever made one set of plans, only to find when the day arrives that the plans you've made are utterly impossible to carry out? Or that, at the very least, they'd be ridiculously impractical to adhere to? Of course you have. We all have. And that's what I'm facing as I wake this morning to the sound of ice pellets hitting our windows. A winter storm. In spring. Sheesh, only in New York! Oh, right. And the rest of the northeast, too! :)

So the dilemma. Mickey and I were planning to picnic in Central Park. It's part of his get-your-mind-off-the-cast-on-your-arm plan. Because, you see, the cast comes off next week but I'm a hairsbreath away from hacking it off myself, I'm so frustrated. Hence, the plan. But today things won't be going according to Mickey's fine plan, not unless I relish the thought of getting cold and damp--which I don't. So we'll have to make alternate plans.

Perhaps a picnic in our apartment? With the heat turned up really, really high so we can wear next to nothing? Yeah, right. Not feeling so romantic with this dratted cast. We'll probably call in for take-out and settle in with a couple of good books. Not a bad way to spend an icy day. Not a bad alternate plan, especially considering the great selection of new books available at Cerridwen Press and Ellora's Cave. Some of the writers here at the goddesses have released some great titles lately, with more to come. Have you checked them out? Recently I've read a lot of books by fellow authors. Some have made me laugh, some have made me cry and all have entertained me. We write a whole range of stories, so there's always something to please every taste. If one doesn't suit your fancy, try another. We've got a bunch!

Yes, today I'll find a new book or two to read from the EC/CP selections and it will be a good day, I know it will. Plans are meant to change, we're meant to adapt and me? I'm always meant to read. :)

Wherever you are, whatever your weather and whoever you plan to spend it with, I hope you have a great day today. And thanks for stopping in.

Popping In

It's completely not my day to blog, and I apologize to the Goddess who's day this is. I'm just popping in to say "Hi!" and wish everyone a good morning. It's warm and sunny here in New York and I hope the same can be said for wherever you are today. That's it, just hello from me. Now I'll pop back out and leave the day's goddess the blog. :)

Free-For-All...Dreams

Hi all,

This is the second free-for-all day here at the Goddesses blog. And today's topic is DREAMS.

Hmm...I know we're supposed to share something about our dreams with you but, uh...er...well, hmmph! No, that wasn't a hairball, I was merely clearing my throat. *G* I haven't had tea yet this morning and it's a bit...dry. Because, well...all right, I'm just going to spit it out and be done with it. My dreams? Well goodness, they're hardly fit for sharing, not even with you, dear friends. Some nights they have me tossing and turning, all sweaty and tangled up in the sheets. I hear that sometimes my dreams even make me moan, so how on earth could I share them with--um, what? What was that? Excuse me? You mean...dreams...like hopes and dreams, that sort of thing?

Oh. Ahem. Of course.

No, I'm not blushing. Not hairballing, not blushing.

So, dreams... I would have to say that I am living my dream. I have the love of a good man, a healthy, happy family and friends that will take my secrets to their graves. (I hope.) And honestly I'm living my dream. I have always wanted to be a writer. A real, honest-to-goodness, paycheck-cashing-from-my-words writer. And thanks to all of you, my dreams have come true.

I hope some of the other goddesses share their dreams today. Should I clue them in on what sort of dreams we're discussing so they don't inadvertantly share something wild and racy with us? No, I didn't think so, either. Let's just sit back and see what happens next. ;)

Until next time,
Nina
